Somerset almost made it... (19.05.08)

The recent report from England Hockey West Office might have have given the impression that the County Prelims were a disappointment for our Counties...

I can't speak for the other Counties but Somerset Men missed out by only 2 goals against the Army who presented an unusually strong side at Aldershot this weekend and won through. We won two games, lost one and drew a really excellent game against Devon. We were very glad to have participated – thanks to some tireless work from Mark House who pulled a full squad together with players coming in from as far afield as Newcastle (Alex Large) and Birmingham (Joel Thomas & Thomas Lumby).

As far as I'm aware everyone in the Squad had a very good time (I gather they drank the local pub out of cider on Saturday evening!) and played to their full potential on Sunday... honestly!

I'd like to take this opportunity to thank Roger Lomas and the team of officials and umpires at Aldershot for a well-organised event - bring on 2009!

It may be of interest to others, but we are going to try and start our campaign earlier next season and look at running a young 'Academy' (18 years +) to feed into the adult game. With so few National League sides in our region we believe there needs to be some other 'pathways' for players to progress beyond County and West (it would have been good to see some EH representative/selector at the competition). If any County is interested in looking at the possibility of fixtures, please contact Neil Lumby | 01458 250284

Also, anyone interested in being involved in this initiative (players, coaches etc.) please contact me too...
